Tourism

Administrative head of the Somontano district, Barbastro´s economy is based largely on agriculture, supported by shepherding and its expanding industrial sector. The city is the focal point for trade in the eastern valleys and this excellent location has played a role in the City’s growth and prosperous development. Barbastro is close to Catalonia, the Basque Country, Navarre and the Ebro Corridor.

It was head of one of the Aragon subdivisions but was later reduced to a Judicial District. It is the central point for services in the area: court of first instance, diocese, district hospital, old people’s residence, two secondary schools and a centre associated with UNED (Distance Education University).

The prestigious Denomination of Origin "Somontano" wine also comes from the district.
